Weight Loss, and The Muscle Connection

I talk to so many people who have varying experiences and knowledge on the subject of weight loss that I usually approach this issue by asking them about their experience with weight loss before I offer any suggestions. It seems to me that people fall into two categories on this issue, those that are teachable and those that know it all. The information on this subject alone fills magazines and newspapers on a daily basis. Yet, we are currently failing as a nation in terms of kicking this problem. While there is a lot of information out there, the concept of weight loss itself has another side to it that I hope will get you thinking as you read this.

Here is an interesting concept: The term “weight loss” is specifically speaking about a number, right? So whatever reduces the number can be anything from muscle loss, to fat loss, to water loss, to waste removal. How pitiful is it that we are obsessed with this number when the number may be deceiving because we equate weight loss to fat loss only. Most weight loss programs fail in the long run because people lose lean muscle. So getting to a number on a scale says very little about the bigger picture, which is whether you look and feel your best.

I say this. You can lose weight, by sitting in a confined area for thirty days, being fed some mush three times a day. But, what will you look like and feel like after the thirty days? You will look starved! Your energy will be in the gutter and you will possibly be sick. This is because your body cannibalized your muscle to stay alive.

So, is weight loss the only objective, really? Muscle tissue is key to maintaining vibrancy and to enhancing metabolism. Generally, muscle tissue requires some specific internal processes to help with growth and recovery. Beyond just working out, there is a need for specific nutritional considerations when attempting to gain or maintain lean muscle mass while losing weight. Also, if exercise is an important ingredient in maintaining muscle, then specific carbohydrates and fats are needed, beyond proteins, to feed the body appropriately for the exercise program prescribed.
