Robert
Schumann said, “The artist’s vocation is to bring light
to the human heart.”
I love that idea, but I also believe it is about expressing and sharing
the light within our heart—letting our feelings flow out through
the motion of our hands and the marks they make on the paper.
It’s about joy and fun! Charles Hawthorne told his students,
“Slop around and have some fun! Yell at me with some color.
Risk everything. Paint with freedom.” What great advice. I love
experimenting with and mixing media—charcoal, watercolor, pastel,
acrylics.
The
past year I’ve given most of my attention to exploring the incredible
versatility of acrylics. I love the gesture of figures—animal
and human, and the unique beauty of each mark.
I
am basically self-taught which mostly means I seek out and learn from
many different sources. I teach locally and think one of the greatest
gifts of art is the connection it creates between people. It also
keeps calling one to really see and fully appreciate what is right
in front of us. Since 2002, I’ve exhibited my work in many local,
state and national juried shows, several galleries, have won many
awards, and also have done many commissions.

about Joy’s paintings:
“Joy brought life to a dream I had carried for several years.
Her work was more magnificent than I could ever have imagined. I will
cherish my commission piece forever.” Laura Jacob
“I can’t thank you enough for the beautiful piece of art
that you created for me. It is truly priceless. I am amazed that you
knew exactly what I wanted from a thumbnail sketch!”
Angela Campbell
“I wanted to tell you how incredible that picture is that you
did for Father’s Day. I can’t tell you how delighted I
am. I feel like I have an heirloom now that certainly my daughter
wants at some point in her life. What a gift it is to have that in
our home….” Cal Rice
