The
Healthy Properties of Garlic

We
all know that Garlic is healthy for us, but are you aware of just
how many great healing properties it contains? This herb has been
used for thousands of years as a preventative and a therapy. One of
the most ancient remedies known to humanity, garlic is a staple in
the diets of an incredibly diverse number of cultures.
Garlic is best known for promoting cardiovascular health, but it also
seems to be the bane of nasty little beasts like bacteria, viruses
and yeast. Research is also showing that garlic is stellar in preventing
coronary artery disease (CAD). A landmark study published in the journal
of Atherosclerosis (1999) suggests that garlic may not only prevent
atherosclerosis, but, in some cases, actually slow progression and
even reverse plaque formation. While plaque reduction has been shown
for some of the newer cholesterol-lowering drugs (e.g.,lovastatin),
garlic may end up being our first choice for the long term prevention
and treatment of atherosclerosis.
As mentioned above, garlic has also been shown to have antibacterial
effects. Louis Pasteur first noted this in 1858. The strength of garlic
appears to be about 1 percent that of penicillin in killing certain
types of bacteria. Garlic is also great for inhibiting viruses such
as the herpes simplex virus type 1, tuberculosis, and in preventing
yeast infections. Other health care applications include anti-cancer
actions, high blood pressure, and increasing resistance to infection.
Obviously, garlic is one of the most important herbs in keeping us
healthy on a daily basis. Research suggests that the best garlic supplements
closely approximate the eating of raw garlic. Carefully prepared garlic
powder will yield allicin almost as efficiently as raw garlic (only
4% less). I personally prepare garlic in a garlic roaster. You can
buy a garlic roaster almost anywhere, and it is the easiest way that
I have found to eat garlic on a daily basis. Place the entire garlic
bulb on the plate, drizzle olive oil over it and season with salt
and pepper. Bake the garlic for about 45-50 minutes and it’s
ready to eat! Oh…Yes, you will smell like garlic the next day!
