Getting
Started -- Keeping It Going
This is it! 2006-the year you’re going to get organized. You stand
in the middle of the room and your eyes slowly take in the space-OH
NO! Where do I start? It’s overwhelming! This will take the rest
of the year and it’s only one room! I know how you feel, but here
are some tips to help you get started without some of the trauma.
Getting
Started
Start Small
1. Define the room.
a. What do you use it for?
b. What would you like to use it for? A bedroom is seldom just
a bedroom. For some people it’s for watching TV-videos, DVD’s.
Maybe some video games or reading. Then you need space for your
TV guide, blank tapes, etc.
Pick
one corner.
Everything that does not match your description of the room must leave.
1. Do
a quick sort. First Basic Principle of Organizing: Put like
things together!
Things that belong in another room
Things that you no longer need or use
All Photos
All laundry
All gift wrap, etc.
After this quick sort - Don’t leave the room to put things
where they go-that’s how you get sidetracked.
It looks
worse now than before you started!!!!!! Don’t get discouraged!
That’s why you start small. Remember --discipline!
Everyday for 1 hour you’ll work on this room until you get it
as you want it!
Now start
thinking about the set up of the room. Think about zones:
sleeping zone, TV zone, reading zone, computer zone etc. Write it down
and tape it to the wall of the chosen area. Start calling it by name.
The library, the office, etc. As you move through the room, place things
in the appropriate zone.
Keeping
it going- Organizing takes discipline-You
must set some rules and then make yourself (and your family) follow
them. In a few weeks, you won’t think about it, you’ll just
do it.
1. Last one out of bed makes it!
2. No laundry on the bed
3. Hang up or put away today’s clothes before you go to bed.
You’ll enjoy waking up to an organized space.
Sure it’s easier just to jump out of bed and head to the kitchen
and it’s easier to fall into bed at night hoping to face the mess
on another day. That’s how you got here!
Let’s
recap:
1. Start small -- just a corner or just an hour-whatever works for you
2. Quick sort -- Put like things together
3. Move out everything that doesn’t go in the space
Then, once a week, you can put it right in minutes!
Call a friend to help or call a professional organizer. A PO can keep
you on track and motivated to get the job done!
Being
organized isn’t difficult – it takes some time and discipline,
but you will save time, something we all need more of, so the results
are worth it!
Happy
Organizing!
