The changing aspen mark the end of another summer in the Rocky
Mountains. Soon these woods will be buried deep by heavy, winter
snows. Knowing this, the experienced hiker will linger here just a bit longer—trying to soak in the last remnants of the season.

Aspen Twilight

Earth and Sky
While exploring the Rocky Mountain backcountry I sometimes encounter a world where the earth and sky melt together into one. This image was taken on such an occasion while watching the sun set on a fall evening along Kebler Pass.

Magical

Magical

There is a brief, magical moment in
an aspen grove early on a fall morning.

The rising sun sets the golden canopy aglow.
The gentle rustle of quaking leaves filters down
to the forest floor.

The musty scent of fresh-fallen leaves wafts up from the ground.

Such mornings become cherished memories,
never to be forgotten.

Loch at Dawn
It was early fall and I had decided to hike up to Andrews Glacier in Rocky Mountain National Park. I started up the trail in the pre-dawn darkness but by the time I reached The Loch, one of the many glacial lakes in the area, the sun had begun to rise. At the western edge of the lake I came across a break in the forest that provided me with this magnificent view to the east. The sun itself was hidden behind a low bank of clouds but its diffuse glow was enough to highlight the subtle ripples on the lake's otherwise mirror-smooth surface.

I'm basically an engineer with the soul of an artist trapped inside. Despite the fact that I spend most of my working hours trapped in an office cubicle, I use my time off to explore and photograph the Rocky Mountain backcountry.

I find that no matter how busy and chaotic our daily lives get, it only takes a bit of time up in the nearby mountains to help us put things back into perspective.

As John Muir said, "Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves."

So if nothing else, I hope my photographs inspire you to pull your hiking boots out of the closet, fill up your backpack, and spend your next day off out exploring this amazing world we have in our own backyard.- Steve Sorensen

Notchtop

Waterfall on Boulder Creek

Spring is slow in coming to the sub alpine forests of the Rocky Mountains. The deep Winter snows hang on tenaciously, reluctant to give way to the changing season. This image of Notchtop Mountain was taken in the middle of June and shows the stubbornness of the winter snows.

You hear the sound of a large waterfall long before it comes into view. Approaching it you are enveloped in a cooling mist and pounding thunder. Perched on the edge of this rushing torrent you are reminded once again that there are powers in nature much greater than us.
